Growing to around 5 metres, this traditional variety is well suited to trellises, fences and other supports where its rapid growth can be accommodated.

Widely grown throughout Asia, Bitter Melon is valued both as a vegetable and for its long history of use in traditional food cultures. The immature fruits are commonly used in curries, stir-fries, soups and stuffed dishes, where their distinctive bitter flavour becomes milder when cooked. Young shoots and leaves may also be harvested and cooked as a leafy green.

A warm-season crop, Jounpuri thrives in hot, humid conditions and rewards gardeners with heavy harvests throughout summer and autumn.
