Native to South America and the Caribbean, it belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae), related to hibiscus and okra. Sea Island cotton was once prized for the world’s finest textiles and remains a rare heirloom variety, valued for both its beauty and resilience. This traditional white form produces brilliant white cotton renowned for its exceptional fibre length, softness and strength. Attractive yellow flowers with dark centres are followed by decorative seed pods that split open to reveal the soft white fibre within. Thrives in warm to hot climates with full sun and well-drained soil and can be grown as an annual in cooler regions.

Approximately 12 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: September to February
Subtropics: September to January
Mild climates: Spring to early summer
Cold climates: Late spring after frost has passed

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly or raise seedlings in trays once soil temperatures are consistently warm. Allow bolls to fully mature and open on the plant before harvesting fibre.
