It is most famously grown as the primary food source for silkworms used in silk production. The tree is also known for one of the fastest movements in the plant kingdom, with its flowers releasing pollen at speeds exceeding half the speed of sound.

The sweet berries are edible once fully ripe, ranging from white to pale pink or purple depending on the individual plant. Fruit can be eaten fresh, dried or used in jams, desserts and baking. The leaves are highly nutritious and have long been used as a high-protein stockfeed for poultry, livestock and other animals.
