Despite its Italian-sounding name, San Valerio—also known as Saint Valery—is a classic French heirloom with roots tracing back to the 1600s. It gained popularity in the late 19th century through the famed Vilmorin-Andrieux seed company and was later introduced to the United States in 1885 by James Vick and Sons of Rochester, New York. Known for its long, slender, deep orange roots, this main-season variety offers a sweet, earthy flavour and crisp texture. Traditionally grown for fresh eating and juicing, it performs reliably across a range of soils and cool climates. A time-tested favourite for gardeners seeking heritage varieties with both flavour and legacy.
