Yellowish-white flesh, harvest when skin turns from dark green to orange, smooth round melon 18-25cm. Old Ukrainian variety, popular on the island of Krim in the Black Sea, ripens early. 80-85 days.
Sweet summer vine fruit, introduced to Europe from tropical Africa by the Romans. Plant in full sun, keep soil moist, water roots not leaves to prevent mildew. Likes rich well drained soil, though not heavily fertilized, add lime to obtain pH of 6.5. Keep moist. Can sow indoors 5 weeks before planting, take care not to damage roots. For seed saving it is best to grow only one variety within 2km. Melons are ripe when the stem turns brown. Save seeds from ripe fruit. Sow after frost.
