Plantain 'Tonic' is a versatile, broadleaf, short-lived perennial forage herb featuring a deep tap root. Traditionally, young leaves were harvested in Europe during spring for fresh, edible greens. This plant is not only attractive to butterflies but also provides highly nutritious feed for grazing animals and poultry, especially during the summer months. It boasts a high protein content of 23% and is rich in minerals, particularly calcium and selenium.
'Tonic' plantain is highly adaptable, thriving in a wide range of soils, and establishes quickly. For optimal pasture improvement, it is best combined with grasses and clovers. This hardy herb is pest and disease-resistant, drought-tolerant, and can grow up to 90 cm tall when in flower.
For sowing, autumn is ideal in temperate and subtropical regions, while in tropical areas, it should be sown from April to August. The seeds germinate best in soil temperatures between 10 - 21°C. The soil should be moderately fertile and well-drained, although 'Tonic' plantain can tolerate acidic conditions with a pH range of 5.5 - 7. To plant, broadcast the seed at a rate of 25 grams per 50 square meters.
