Vicia faba
A classic and early maturing broad bean with a long history of cultivation, known in Britain as early as 600 B.C. âAquadulceâ (also known as Long Pod) produces long, well filled pods with a rich, nutty flavour and is a valuable winter and spring vegetable. Highly tolerant of cold, mature plants withstand heavy frost and perform reliably through cool conditions. Pods can be eaten fresh like peas or left to mature for dried beans. The dried seeds are excellent in casseroles, boiled for Greek style salads with garlic and olive oil, or used to make hummus. Broad beans are rich in vitamins B and E and also contribute to soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. Harvest typically occurs in around 90 to 120 days.
Approximately 50 seeds per packet
Seed weight: approximately 1 seed per gram
When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: April to June
Subtropics: March to July
Mild climates: February to August
Cold climates: late summer through spring
Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly into well drained soil in full sun. Sow seed 5 to 7 cm deep and space plants 20 to 25 cm apart, with rows 60 to 75 cm apart. Broad beans prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil and do not respond well to heavy manuring, which can promote excessive leaf growth at the expense of pods. In warmer areas, pinching out the growing tips after the first flowers appear helps encourage pod set. Plants may benefit from support using stakes and string as they grow. Mature plants tolerate frost well.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
Vicia faba
A productive broad bean variety bred for reliable yields and large, well filled pods. âBig Benâ produces plump beans with a mild, nutty flavour, suitable for eating fresh or allowing to mature for drying. Well adapted to cool season growing, it performs strongly through winter and spring and tolerates frost once established. Plants are robust and upright, making them well suited to home gardens and small scale production.

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly into well drained soil in full sun. Sow seed 5 to 7 cm deep and space plants 20 to 25 cm apart, with rows 60 to 75 cm apart. Broad beans prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil and moderate fertility. Avoid excessive manure, which can promote leafy growth over pod production. In warmer areas, pinching out the growing tips after flowering begins can improve pod set. Plants may benefit from light support as they grow and mature.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
Vicia faba
A compact broad bean variety producing heavy crops of long pods reaching up to 20 cm. âColes Dwarfâ forms a shorter, sturdier plant than many traditional broad beans, making it well suited to smaller gardens and exposed sites. Beans have a good, full flavour and can be eaten fresh or allowed to mature for drying. A reliable cool season crop that performs well through winter and spring and tolerates frost once established.
