Tanacetum vulgare

Tansy is a hardy, long-lived perennial herb valued for its attractive fern-like foliage, clusters of bright golden-yellow button flowers and its many traditional uses in the garden. Growing to around 90 cm tall, it forms vigorous clumps that provide texture, colour and habitat for beneficial insects throughout the growing season.

For centuries, Tansy has been cultivated as a companion plant and household herb. Its strongly aromatic foliage contains natural oils that have traditionally been used to help deter a range of insect pests, including moths, ants, aphids, flies and borers. In the vegetable garden it is often planted near potatoes and other crops as part of a diverse companion planting system.

Historically, Tansy was also used in herbal medicine and cookery, though modern use is generally limited due to the potency of its essential oils. The plant has been used as a compost activator and is valued for contributing potassium and phosphorus-rich organic matter to compost heaps and mulch systems.

Tansy thrives in a wide range of conditions and is an excellent choice for cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, food forests and productive landscapes. The flowers attract a wide range of beneficial insects, while the foliage provides season-long interest.

Note: Tansy contains naturally occurring compounds that can be toxic if consumed in large quantities. It is grown primarily as an ornamental, companion and compost plant rather than a culinary herb.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to July
Subtropics: March to August
Mild climates: August to April
Cold climates: September to November

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of moist seed-raising mix and lightly press into place. Cover only very lightly, as light assists germination. Keep moist until seedlings emerge. Transplant into a sunny or partly shaded position, spacing plants 45–60 cm apart. Tansy prefers well-drained soil but is highly adaptable once established. Remove spent flower heads if self-seeding is not desired.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
