Lobularia maritima

Carpet of Snow, also known as Snowcloth, is a classic cottage garden favourite producing a low-growing carpet of tiny, fragrant white flowers. Perfect for edging, pathways, rockeries, containers or as a living groundcover beneath roses and other taller plants.

More than just a pretty flower, Sweet Alyssum is an excellent insectary plant, attracting bees, hoverflies, lacewings, parasitic wasps and other beneficial insects into the garden. This makes it particularly useful around vegetable gardens, where it can be planted along pathways, around beds or in rows between crops to encourage a diverse population of pollinators and natural predators.

Plants tolerate light frost and perform across a wide range of Australian climates, although they appreciate regular moisture and can struggle during prolonged hot, dry conditions. Regular trimming or deadheading will encourage fresh growth and continued flowering.

Seed count: approximately 3,000 seeds/g
Approximately 1,200 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring to early summer

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or into trays, scattering the fine seed over moist soil and covering only very lightly. Keep consistently moist during germination.

Transplant or thin to approximately 15–20 cm apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. Plant throughout productive gardens to provide a continuing source of flowers for beneficial insects.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
