Centaurium erythraea

Centaury is a delicate annual to short-lived biennial herb native to Europe, producing clusters of attractive star-shaped pink flowers above slender stems throughout spring and summer. Long valued in traditional European herbal medicine, it is renowned as one of the classic bitter herbs, prized for supporting healthy digestion. Its nectar-rich flowers also attract bees and other beneficial pollinators, making it a welcome addition to herb and cottage gardens.

Traditionally, Centaury has been used to stimulate the appetite, support sluggish digestion, ease mild stomach discomfort and assist recovery during convalescence. Its intensely bitter flavour is characteristic of herbs used to encourage healthy digestive function.

Approximately 6,000–8,000 seeds per gram

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to July
Subtropics: March to August
Mild climates: March to May or September to November
Cold climates: September to November after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of a fine, well-drained seed-raising mix and press gently into the soil without covering, as light assists germination. Keep evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Transplant into a sunny or lightly shaded position with well-drained soil, spacing plants 20–30 cm apart. Avoid overwatering once established.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
