Indigofera tinctoria

Indigo is a beautiful tropical shrub and one of the world's oldest cultivated dye plants, grown for thousands of years to produce the rich blue indigo dye that coloured textiles across Asia, Africa and Europe. Reaching 1–2 m tall, it bears graceful pinnate foliage and clusters of delicate pink to purple pea-shaped flowers that attract bees and other pollinators.

Best suited to warm climates with a long growing season, Indigo thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. The leaves are harvested and traditionally fermented to extract the famous natural indigo pigment, making it a rewarding plant for gardeners interested in natural dyes, fibre crafts and historical plants. As a member of the legume family, it also helps improve soil by fixing atmospheric nitrogen.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: September to April
Subtropics: September to January
Mild climates: October to December
Cold climates: October to November after frost

Planting / Sowing

Scarify seed lightly with fine sandpaper or soak in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing to improve germination. Sow 5–10 mm deep in a quality seed-raising mix and keep evenly moist at 20–30°C. Transplant seedlings into a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil, spacing plants 60–100 cm apart. Protect young plants from frost and harvest leaves once the plants are well established.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
