Ruta graveolens

Rue is a traditional medicinal and culinary herb that forms an attractive, compact perennial shrub with distinctive blue-green foliage and clusters of small yellow flowers. Growing to around 60–90 cm tall, it is highly aromatic and has been cultivated for centuries in herb gardens throughout Europe and the Mediterranean region.

Historically, Rue was valued in traditional herbal medicine and was commonly used as a household herb. It has also long been grown for its strong fragrance, which is believed to help deter a range of insect pests including fleas, ants and flies. The flowers attract beneficial insects, making it a useful addition to productive and ornamental gardens alike.

Its finely textured foliage provides year-round interest and contrasts beautifully with other herbs and flowering plants. Once established, Rue is drought tolerant and thrives in sunny positions with well-drained soil.

Note: Rue contains potent bioactive compounds and can cause skin irritation in some individuals, particularly when handling the plant in strong sunlight. It should be used with appropriate care.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of moist seed-raising mix and lightly cover with a fine layer of soil. Keep moist until germination occurs. Transplant seedlings into a sunny position with well-drained soil, spacing plants 50–60 cm apart. Once established, Rue requires very little maintenance and is well suited to herb gardens, borders and dry garden plantings.
