Anthoxanthum odoratum

Vanilla Grass is a charming, aromatic perennial grass valued for its sweet fragrance and graceful, natural appearance. Growing to approximately 50 cm tall, it forms soft clumps of fine foliage that gradually spread through a gentle creeping habit. During the growing season, the leaves and flowering stems release a distinctive sweet scent often compared to fresh hay, vanilla and almond.

Native to Europe, Vanilla Grass has long been appreciated in traditional meadows and unimproved pastures, where its fragrance contributes to the characteristic scent of freshly cut hay. The aroma comes from naturally occurring coumarin compounds that become particularly noticeable as the foliage dries. Historically, the dried grass was used to perfume homes, linens and storage areas.

Its delicate form makes it well suited to cottage gardens, meadow plantings, naturalistic landscapes and sensory gardens where its fragrance can be appreciated throughout the warmer months. In cooler climates it may become dormant during winter before returning with fresh growth in spring.

Easy to grow and adaptable to a range of conditions, Vanilla Grass provides texture, movement and fragrance while blending beautifully with wildflowers and other meadow species.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of prepared soil or seed-raising mix and lightly cover with a fine layer of soil. Keep moist until germination occurs. Transplant or thin seedlings to 20–30 cm apart. Prefers full sun to partial shade and performs best in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Allow plants space to spread naturally and develop their characteristic fragrant foliage.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
