Lavender

Lavender refers to a group of aromatic perennials in the genus Lavandula, cherished for centuries for their fragrance, beauty and gentle medicinal qualities. These sun-loving plants produce soft grey foliage and long flower spikes that attract bees and beneficial insects throughout the warmer months. Their blooms are used in teas, culinary blends and traditional calming remedies, and the essential oils in the flowers and leaves give lavender its well-known soothing scent.

Common names for lavender often overlap and change from place to place, which leads to a great deal of confusion. In the United States, Lavandula dentata is commonly called French lavender, while Lavandula stoechas is known as Spanish lavender. In the United Kingdom, L. stoechas is frequently referred to as French lavender, and in France, L. dentata is sometimes called English lavender. Because these regional names vary so widely, the most accurate way to identify lavender is by its botanical name, such as Lavandula angustifolia, Lavandula dentata or Lavandula stoechas.

Lavender thrives in full sun and well drained soil and rewards even modest care with years of steady growth and flowering.
