Capparis spinosa

The Caper Bush is a distinctive, slow-growing perennial shrub native to the dry, rocky landscapes of the Mediterranean. It produces attractive white flowers with long purple stamens during the warmer months, followed by edible fruits. The familiar culinary capers are the unopened flower buds, traditionally harvested before opening and preserved in salted wine vinegar or brine. Well adapted to hot, dry conditions, the Caper Bush thrives in poor, well-drained soils and makes an excellent choice for water-wise gardens once established.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to July
Subtropics: September to November
Mild climates: September to November
Cold climates: October to December after frost

Planting / Sowing

For improved germination, mix seed with slightly moist sand and refrigerate (cold stratify) for two weeks before sowing. Sow seed 5–10 mm deep into a free-draining seed-raising mix and keep warm with only moderate moisture, avoiding waterlogging. Germination is naturally slow and often irregular, with low success rates being common. Once established, transplant into a sunny position with very well-drained, rocky or sandy soil. Space plants 1–2 m apart and water sparingly after establishment.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
