Comfrey is a vigorous herbaceous perennial growing to around 1 m tall, producing large, textured leaves and clusters of nodding purple, pink or creamy-white flowers that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Once established, it develops an extensive deep root system that mines nutrients from the subsoil, making it one of the most valued plants in organic gardens and permaculture systems. Plants are long-lived and can readily regenerate from even small pieces of root, so choose the planting position carefully.
Traditionally, the young leaves were eaten cooked in soups, pasta dishes and other recipes, while the roots and leaves featured in a variety of historical herbal preparations. Today, Comfrey is best known as a valuable garden plant. Its nutrient-rich foliage is ideal for composting, mulching or making a liquid fertiliser by steeping chopped leaves in water for several weeks. The resulting brew is naturally rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and trace minerals, making it an excellent tonic for flowering and fruiting plants.
Comfrey has a long history of external use in traditional herbal medicine for bruises, sprains and minor injuries.
Due to the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, internal use is no longer generally recommended. Topical use should also be undertaken with appropriate knowledge and care.

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed 5 mm deep into a moist, well-drained seed-raising mix and keep consistently moist until germination. Transplant into full sun or partial shade, spacing plants 60–90 cm apart. Comfrey prefers fertile soil with reliable moisture but tolerates a wide range of conditions once established. Plants can also be propagated from root cuttings, with even small root sections capable of producing new plants. Choose the planting site carefully, as established plants are difficult to remove completely.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
