Capsella bursa-pastoris

Shepherd's Purse is a hardy annual or biennial herb that has accompanied people across the globe for centuries, thriving in gardens, paddocks, roadsides and disturbed ground. Recognisable by its distinctive heart-shaped seed pods, said to resemble the small purses carried by shepherds in medieval times, this adaptable plant has long been valued as both a food and medicinal herb.

Traditionally used in herbal medicine throughout Europe and Asia, Shepherd's Purse has been particularly associated with supporting normal blood clotting and has a long history of use in herbal preparations. The plant contains vitamins A, C and K, along with naturally occurring minerals including potassium, calcium and iron.

Young leaves can be eaten fresh in salads or cooked as a leafy green vegetable. The flavour is mild with a subtle peppery note, making it a useful addition to foraged and homegrown food gardens. Its ability to tolerate partial shade and poor soils makes it an easy and rewarding herb to grow in a wide range of conditions.

Shepherd's Purse readily self-seeds when happy, providing a continual supply of leaves and seed for future generations of plants.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of moist soil or seed-raising mix and lightly press into place. Cover only very lightly, as light assists germination. Keep moist until seedlings emerge. Thin or transplant seedlings to 15–20 cm apart. Grows well in full sun or partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soil types. Allow some plants to flower and set seed if you wish to encourage natural self-sowing.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
