Taraxacum officinale

Dandelion is a hardy perennial herb valued for both its nutritional qualities and its long history of culinary and traditional herbal use. The young, deeply toothed leaves are delicious fresh in salads or lightly cooked, while the bright yellow flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinators. Every part of the plant has been traditionally used, from the edible flowers to the nutritious leaves and deep taproot. Dandelion also makes an excellent companion plant and compost activator, helping recycle nutrients from deep within the soil.

The leaves are naturally rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A and K, along with calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron. Traditionally, the roots have been dried and roasted to make a caffeine-free coffee substitute, while young leaves can be blanched by tying them together to produce a milder flavour.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface or cover lightly with 2–3 mm of fine soil in full sun or partial shade. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination. Dandelion grows best in fertile, well-drained soil but adapts readily to a wide range of conditions. Space plants 20–30 cm apart and harvest young leaves regularly for the best flavour. Established plants readily self-seed if flower heads are allowed to mature.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
