Artemisia absinthium
Wormwood is a striking perennial shrub valued for its finely divided silvery-grey foliage, aromatic fragrance and long history of medicinal and garden use. Growing to approximately 1 metre tall, it forms an attractive mound of soft-textured foliage that provides contrast and structure in herb gardens, cottage gardens and dry landscape plantings.
Native to Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia, Wormwood has been cultivated for centuries as a medicinal herb and is perhaps best known as a traditional ingredient in the historic beverage absinthe. It has a distinctive bitter aroma and has long been used in herbal preparations. The plant remains a popular addition to medicinal and historical herb gardens.
In the garden, Wormwood is valued as a companion plant due to its strongly aromatic foliage, which has traditionally been used to help deter fleas, flies and moths. The plant is also known as a dynamic accumulator of potassium, making it useful in composting and mulch systems. Gardeners should note that Wormwood can inhibit the growth of nearby plants through allelopathic compounds released from its roots and foliage, so careful placement is recommended.
Drought tolerant and easy to grow, Wormwood thrives in sunny positions with well-drained soil and requires little maintenance once established.

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: April to July
Subtropics: March to August
Mild climates: March to September
Cold climates: March to May and September to November
Planting / Sowing
Sow seed on the surface of moist seed-raising mix and lightly press into place. Do not cover, as light assists germination. Keep moist until seedlings emerge. Transplant into a sunny position with well-drained soil, spacing plants 60–90 cm apart. Avoid planting too close to vegetables or sensitive ornamentals due to its growth-inhibiting properties.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
Pachyrhizus erosus
(Jicama or Mexican Water Chestnut)
A climbing perennial from Central America grown for its edible tuber. The tuber can be eaten raw or cooked and has the texture of raw apple, with sweet white crisp flesh and high quality starch. When cooked it retains its crunch and is often used in Chinese dishes in place of water chestnut or bamboo shoots. Beans and pods are inedible, containing rotenone, a potent insecticide.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
Achillea millefolium
Cerise Queen is a colourful ornamental Yarrow producing broad, flattened clusters of flowers in shades ranging from soft pink through to rich cerise and cherry-red. Growing to approximately 40 cm tall, the flowering stems rise above finely divided, fern-like foliage and provide colour over a long flowering season.
Hardy and wonderfully useful in the garden, Cerise Queen has a clumping, gradually spreading habit and is highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects. The strong stems and long-lasting flowers also have an excellent vase life, making this a valuable addition to cutting gardens, cottage plantings and perennial borders.
Exceptionally tolerant of heat and dry conditions once established, Yarrow performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. Regular picking or deadheading encourages further flowering, while established clumps can be divided periodically to control their spread.
Cerise Queen is an ornamental selection of Achillea millefolium. While the species has a long and important history as a medicinal herb, particularly for its traditional use in wound care, fevers, circulation and the digestive system, the white-flowered wild type is generally preferred for herbal preparations. Cerise Queen is primarily grown for its richly coloured flowers and ornamental value.

Sow directly or raise in trays, pressing the fine seed gently onto the surface of moist soil or seed-raising mix. Cover only very lightly, as light assists germination.
Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 30–40 cm apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, plants require relatively little supplementary water and tolerate hot, dry conditions well.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
Achillea filipendulina
Cloth of Gold is a striking herbaceous perennial producing broad, flattened clusters of rich golden-yellow flowers above deeply divided, fern-like foliage. Growing up to approximately 1.5 m tall, mature flower heads can reach 15 cm across, creating a bold architectural display through perennial borders, cottage gardens and cutting gardens.
The long, sturdy stems and substantial flower heads are excellent for floral arrangements, with an impressive vase life. They also dry beautifully, retaining much of their shape and colour for everlasting arrangements. The flowers attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects throughout their long flowering season.
A hardy member of the Asteraceae family, Golden Yarrow thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and becomes particularly tolerant of heat and dry conditions once established. Plants gradually form spreading clumps without generally becoming as aggressive as some other Yarrows and are easily propagated by division.
Achillea filipendulina also has a history of traditional herbal use, particularly in its native range through Central and Western Asia. Like other members of the genus, it has been used traditionally for digestive complaints, inflammation, fever and wound care, although it is much less commonly used in Western herbal practice than the familiar medicinal Yarrow, Achillea millefolium.

Achillea millefolium
The white-flowering form of Yarrow is the variety most commonly grown for medicinal use and has been valued by herbalists for thousands of years. Its botanical name honours the legendary Greek warrior Achilles, who according to tradition used the plant to treat the wounds of his soldiers on the battlefield. Over the centuries it has accumulated many common names including Bloodwort, Woundwort, Staunchweed, Knight's Milfoil and Herba Militaris, reflecting its long association with wound care and first aid.
This hardy perennial spreads from a creeping rootstock to form a soft, feathery groundcover topped with clusters of white flowers held on stems reaching approximately 40 cm tall. The blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects, making Yarrow a valuable addition to wildlife gardens and productive landscapes.
Yarrow has a rich history in traditional herbal medicine, where it has been used as a tea, tincture and topical preparation. It has traditionally been regarded as a blood-building and immune-supportive herb and valued for its soothing effects on the mucous membranes. The plant remains one of the most widely cultivated medicinal herbs in temperate regions.
In the garden, Yarrow is prized as a dynamic accumulator and compost activator, contributing potassium, copper, iron and sulphur to compost systems. Its aromatic foliage may also help deter certain insect pests, while its drought tolerance and resilience make it an exceptionally useful companion plant.
