Daucus carota subsp. sativus
Thumbelina, also known as Paris Market, is a charming French heirloom Carrot producing distinctive round, bright orange roots up to approximately 5 cm across. Its compact, almost spherical shape makes it immediately recognisable and particularly useful where soil depth is limited.
The small roots have a sweet, crisp texture and excellent flavour and have long been prized for their presentation in the kitchen. Sought after by chefs and restaurateurs, they are beautiful roasted or glazed whole, steamed, pickled or served fresh when harvested young and tender.
Unlike long-rooted carrots, Thumbelina does not require deeply cultivated soil, making it an excellent choice for containers, raised beds and gardens with heavier or shallower soils. Loose, fertile, well-drained soil will still produce the smoothest and most evenly rounded roots.
Approximately 400 seeds per packet
When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Most of the year, with best results autumn to spring
Mild climates: Spring to autumn
Cold climates: Spring to early autumn, avoiding periods of heavy frost
Planting / Sowing
Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 5â10 mm deep. Carrots dislike transplanting. Keep the soil surface consistently moist until germination.
Thin seedlings to approximately 3â5 cm apart once established. Maintain even moisture throughout root development to encourage smooth, tender roots. This compact variety is particularly suitable for pots and containers at least 15â20 cm deep.
Harvest once the round roots reach up to approximately 5 cm across, or earlier for tender baby carrots.
Maturity: approximately 70 days.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
Daucus carota
French heirloom carrot producing smooth, cylindrical roots with bright orange flesh and a sweet, tender flavour. Early maturing and well suited to fresh eating, juicing and cooking. Carrot
Very nutritious vegetable originating from central Asia. Richest vegetable in vitamin A. Used by ancient Greek physicians as stomach tonic, known in Roman times and widely used as a vegetable by 13th century. Sunny spot. Good in all soils, likes well drained friable soil, fertilised for previous crop. Thin to 20-50mm and use thinning's as baby carrots. Sow seed direct, keeping seeds moist, can cover with hessian or similar until germination which is usually about 5-6 days, then uncover to let light in. Rotate crops to prevent disease build-up. Cleaned carrots store well in cool conditions. Sow spring, summer and autumn, best not sown in heavy frost.

Daucus carota
Carrot Microgreens and Baby Leaf Greens offer a delicate carrot flavour with a hint of parsley-like freshness. The fine, feathery foliage adds texture, colour and a subtle sweetness to salads, sandwiches, wraps and gourmet garnishes.
Harvested young, carrot greens provide an elegant and aromatic addition to mixed salad blends and microgreen mixes. Their distinctive foliage and mild flavour make them particularly popular with chefs and home growers seeking something a little different from traditional leafy greens.
Although slower to germinate than many microgreen varieties, carrot rewards patience with attractive, flavourful shoots that are both versatile and easy to use in the kitchen. The young greens can be harvested as microgreens or allowed to develop further for baby leaf production.

Planting / Sowing
For microgreens, sow seed densely over a moist growing medium and lightly cover with a fine layer of seed-raising mix or vermiculite. Keep consistently moist throughout germination, which may take longer than many other microgreen crops.
For baby leaf production, sow thinly into trays, containers or garden beds and harvest the young foliage as required. Provide bright light, good airflow and regular moisture for the best quality growth.
Harvest microgreens when the first true leaves begin to appear, typically 14â21 days after sowing, or continue growing for larger baby leaf harvests.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
