Lobularia maritima

Royal Carpet is a compact Sweet Alyssum producing masses of rich, deep violet flowers on low-growing plants reaching approximately 12 cm. Its dense, spreading habit creates a colourful carpet, making it ideal for edging, pathways, rockeries, containers and the front of garden beds.

The tiny, fragrant flowers are highly attractive to bees and beneficial insects, making Royal Carpet particularly useful around vegetable gardens and productive growing areas. Plant between beds or along pathways to provide nectar and pollen while adding a striking splash of colour.

Hardy and easy to grow, Alyssum performs in full sun or partial shade and flowers over an extended period in suitable conditions. Regular trimming or deadheading encourages fresh growth and continued flowering.

Seed count: approximately 3,000 seeds/g

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring to early summer

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or into trays, scattering the fine seed over moist, well-drained soil. Sow very shallowly, pressing gently into the surface and covering only lightly.

Keep consistently moist during germination. Once established, grow in full sun to partial shade and trim lightly after flowering to encourage fresh growth and further blooms.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
