Canna edulis

Also known as Queensland Arrowroot, Canna edulis is a vigorous perennial widely valued in permaculture systems for its productivity and versatility. Growing to around 2 m tall, it produces lush green foliage that makes an excellent living windbreak, mulch source and stock fodder. The large, starchy underground rhizomes can be cooked and used as a thickener or sliced and fried like potato, while the young shoots and immature seeds are also edible. Although it is most commonly propagated by division of the rhizomes, it can be grown from seed with patience. The extremely hard seed coat benefits from scarification by rubbing the seed against sandpaper, concrete or a metal file before sowing, as untreated seed can take many months to germinate.

Approximately 4–6 seeds per gram
Approximately 10 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: September to April
Subtropics: September to December
Mild climates: October to December
Cold climates: Late spring to early summer after frost

Planting / Sowing

Scarify the hard seed coat before sowing by rubbing each seed against sandpaper, concrete or a metal file until a small section of the outer coat is thinned. Sow 20–25 mm deep into well-drained soil or seed-raising mix and keep consistently warm and moist during germination. In warm regions, sow in early spring, while in cooler areas wait until late spring once frost has passed. Plant in full sun and allow approximately 1–2 m between plants to accommodate their vigorous growth.

Not available for WA. Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety.
