Beta vulgaris

Melbourne Early Slowbolt, also known as Boltardy, is a dependable heirloom beetroot variety valued for its resistance to bolting and excellent performance through the cooler months. Producing smooth globe-shaped roots with uniform deep red flesh, it delivers fine flavour, tender texture and reliable yields across a wide range of growing conditions.

The roots are ringless, richly coloured and ideal for fresh use, roasting, pickling or juicing. They can also be harvested early as sweet and tender baby beets, making this a versatile variety for gardeners who enjoy harvesting crops at different stages of maturity. The leafy tops are equally useful and can be picked young for salads or cooked as a nutritious leafy green.

A favourite among home gardeners for many decades, Melbourne Early Slowbolt continues producing well through winter and is less likely to run to seed during periods of fluctuating temperatures than many traditional beetroot varieties.

Planting / Sowing

For baby leaf production, sow seed densely in trays, boxes or garden beds and harvest leaves when they reach 8–15 cm tall. For mature roots, sow seed directly into prepared soil 10–15 mm deep and thin seedlings to 10 cm apart. Beetroot performs best when direct sown and prefers not to have its roots disturbed.

Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Maintain consistent moisture throughout the growing period for the best root development and flavour. Harvest baby beets as desired or allow roots to mature fully in approximately 57–60 days.

Baby Leaf and Microgreens offer a simple and nutritious way to add fresh homegrown greens, vitamins and minerals to your daily diet.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
