Beta vulgaris

Yellow Eckendorf, often known as Yellow Mangel or Fodder Beet, is a highly productive heritage variety grown for its large roots and abundant leafy tops. Producing substantial orange-yellow roots with golden flesh, it is valued as both a useful livestock fodder crop and a versatile garden vegetable.

The roots are sweet, nutritious and can be cooked and eaten much like traditional beetroot, while the large leafy tops may be harvested and used as greens. Yellow Eckendorf is renowned for its vigorous growth, heavy yields and ability to produce large roots even in less-than-perfect conditions.

Traditionally grown throughout Europe and Australia as a winter feed crop, this variety remains popular with smallholders, hobby farmers and home gardeners seeking a productive dual-purpose crop. Its large roots store well and can provide a valuable source of feed or food through the cooler months.

Planting / Sowing

For baby leaf production, sow seed densely in trays, boxes or garden beds and harvest leaves when they reach 8–15 cm tall. For mature roots, sow seed directly into prepared soil 15–20 mm deep and thin seedlings to 20–30 cm apart to allow room for the large roots to develop.

Grow in full sun in fertile, deeply cultivated soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. Keep soil evenly moist during growth and provide adequate space for the roots to reach their full size. Harvest leaves as required and lift roots once mature.

Baby Leaf and Microgreens offer a simple and nutritious way to add fresh homegrown greens, vitamins and minerals to your daily diet.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
