Monarda citriodora (Lemon Beebalm / Purple Horsemint)

A delightful lemon-scented annual wildflower native to the American Southwest and a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae). Fast growing and easy to cultivate, Lemon Beebalm reaches approximately 90cm in height and produces striking whorls of pinky-purple flowers over an extended flowering season. The blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and a wide range of other beneficial pollinating insects, making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens and productive landscapes.

The aromatic foliage releases a pleasant lemon fragrance when brushed or crushed. Traditionally, Monarda citriodora has been used in herbal medicine and the fresh or dried leaves and flowers can be enjoyed in salads or brewed into a fragrant herbal tea. Drought tolerant once established, it performs well in a variety of soil types including sandy loam, clay and rocky soils, provided drainage is good. Plants readily self-sow under favourable conditions.

Approximately 290 seeds per packet

2000 seeds/gram

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring after frost has passed

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed onto the surface of a fine seed raising mix and lightly press into place, as light assists germination. Keep moist but not waterlogged during germination. Position in full sun to part shade and transplant seedlings once large enough to handle. Space plants approximately 30–40cm apart. Drought tolerant once established but performs best with occasional watering during extended dry periods. Plants may self-seed freely in suitable conditions.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
