Borago officinalis

An attractive and highly useful annual growing to approximately 90cm in height. Borage produces masses of striking blue star-shaped flowers that are highly attractive to bees and other beneficial insects, making it one of the best pollinator plants for the productive garden. Traditionally grown as a companion plant for strawberries, it is valued for attracting pollinators and supporting overall garden diversity.

The young leaves and flowers are edible and can be added to salads, desserts and drinks or used as colourful garnishes. Borage has a long history of traditional use and was once said to "gladden the heart". The plant is also known for concentrating potassium and contributes valuable organic matter when incorporated into the garden. Easy to grow and quick to flower, it readily self-seeds under favourable conditions.

Tropics: May to August
Subtropics: September to November
Mild climates: October to December
Cold climates: November to December

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly into well-drained soil in a sunny position. In warm areas, plant in early spring. In cool areas, wait until late spring. Cover seed lightly and keep moist during germination. Space plants approximately 40–60cm apart to allow room for their spreading habit. Borage prefers well-drained soil and regular watering during establishment but is relatively hardy once established. Approximately 8–10 weeks to flowering.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
