Arctium lappa

Takinogawa Long is a traditional Japanese Burdock variety grown for its long, slender roots, which typically reach approximately 30–60 cm. Known in Japan as gobo, Burdock has been cultivated as a vegetable for centuries and remains an important ingredient in Japanese cooking.

The crisp roots have an earthy, mildly sweet flavour and are commonly sliced or julienned for stir-fries, soups, stews and pickles. Young stems can also be eaten when properly prepared. Takinogawa Long matures in approximately 120 days and develops its best long, straight roots in deep, loose soil free from stones and compaction.

Burdock is also an important traditional medicinal herb. The root has long been used as a cleansing and nutritive tonic, particularly for the skin, liver and digestive system. Traditionally described as an alterative, it has been used for chronic skin complaints, sluggish digestion and to support elimination. The root contains inulin and other prebiotic fibres that support beneficial gut bacteria.

A hardy biennial, Burdock forms its substantial root and leafy rosette during its first season before flowering in its second year. Harvest roots during the first year while they remain tender.

Seed count: approximately 50 seeds/g
Approximately 60 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter in cooler locations
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring to early summer

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 1–2 cm deep. Burdock develops a long taproot and does not transplant particularly well.

Thin seedlings to approximately 15–20 cm apart in full sun to partial shade. For long, straight roots, prepare soil deeply before sowing, removing stones and breaking up compacted layers. Keep consistently moist during active growth.

Harvest roots at approximately 120 days or while still young and tender. Dig carefully and deeply alongside the root before lifting, as mature roots can be difficult to remove intact.

Maturity: approximately 120 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
