Brassica rapa var. pekinensis

Tokyo Bekana is a fast-growing Japanese leafy green prized for its bright lime-green leaves, delicate ruffled edges and slender white stems. Often described as the Japanese counterpart to Chinese cabbage, it combines exceptional tenderness with a mild, sweet flavour that appeals even to those who are not usually fond of brassicas.

Highly versatile and easy to grow, Tokyo Bekana can be harvested young as a baby leaf salad green or allowed to mature into larger leafy plants. The crisp, succulent leaves are delicious fresh in salads and sandwiches, while mature leaves are excellent steamed, added to soups or quickly stir-fried. When harvested by cutting the outer leaves, plants will continue producing fresh growth for multiple harvests.

Its rapid growth, attractive appearance and reliable performance make Tokyo Bekana a favourite for kitchen gardens, raised beds and cut-and-come-again production throughout much of the year.

Tropics: April to August
Subtropics: March to September
Mild climates: February to October
Cold climates: Spring and autumn

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 5 mm deep directly into prepared garden beds, containers or seedling trays. For baby leaf production, sow more densely and begin harvesting from approximately 21 days after sowing. For mature plants, thin seedlings to 20–30 cm apart.

Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, moisture-retentive soil enriched with compost. Keep plants well watered for tender growth and harvest outer leaves regularly to encourage continual regrowth. Baby leaves are ready in approximately 21 days, with full-sized plants maturing in around 45 days.

Baby Leaf and Microgreens offer a simple and nutritious way to add fresh homegrown greens, vitamins and minerals to your daily diet.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
