Brassica oleracea var. sabauda

Savoy Verona Purple is a beautiful traditional Savoy Cabbage producing large heads of lightly crinkled leaves washed with rich purple and violet tones. The colour intensifies as temperatures fall, making this an especially striking variety for the winter vegetable garden.

The tender, textured leaves have an excellent sweet, mild flavour and can be enjoyed finely shredded in salads and slaws or used for steaming, braising, roasting, soups and stuffed cabbage dishes. The lightly savoyed leaves are tender enough for fresh use while still holding their texture particularly well when cooked.

A hardy cool-season variety, Verona Purple performs best in full sun with rich, fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture. Cool conditions not only enhance its colouring but also help develop its sweet flavour. Mature heads store well after harvest, making it a useful variety for extending the home-grown cabbage season.

Approximately 120 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter in cooler locations
Subtropics: Late summer to winter
Mild climates: Late summer to winter and early spring
Cold climates: Spring to summer

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or raise in trays, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Keep consistently moist during germination and establishment.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 45–60 cm apart in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Maintain regular moisture as heads develop and harvest once they feel firm and well formed.

If saving seed, remember that Savoy Cabbage will cross-pollinate readily with other compatible Brassica oleracea varieties, so adequate isolation is required to maintain the variety true to type.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
