Eschscholzia californica

A beautiful and unusual California Poppy selection producing delicate mauve-pink to soft lavender blooms above finely divided silver-green foliage. The silky flowers create a gentle haze of colour through the garden, flowering generously over many months and bringing a softer palette to borders, cottage gardens and wildflower plantings.

Like other California Poppies, Purple Gleam opens its flowers with the morning sun and closes them again on cloudy or rainy days. Hardy, drought tolerant and remarkably easy to grow, it thrives in poor soils where many other flowering plants struggle. Once established, plants readily self-sow, creating natural drifts of colour year after year with very little effort. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and other beneficial insects.

Approximately 200 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn, winter and spring
Cold climates: Spring and early summer

Planting / Sowing
Broadcast seed directly onto prepared soil and lightly press into the surface, or sow into pots and transplant carefully once seedlings are established. Position in full sun and avoid overly rich soils, which can encourage excessive foliage at the expense of flowers. Keep moist during germination, then water only as required. Plants are drought tolerant once established and will often self-seed freely in suitable conditions. Approximately 8–12 weeks to flowering.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
