Eschscholzia californica

A striking California Poppy producing vibrant fire engine red blooms that create a bold display through the garden for months on end. The vivid flowers are beautifully contrasted by finely divided silvery-grey foliage, making Red Chief a standout choice for borders, cottage gardens, wildflower plantings and low-maintenance landscapes.

Like all California Poppies, Red Chief flowers generously and readily self-sows once established, often returning year after year with little effort. The blooms open with the morning sun and close again during overcast or rainy weather, adding a charming rhythm to the garden. Hardy, drought tolerant and easy to grow, it thrives in poor soils and challenging conditions while continuing to produce an abundance of colour. The flowers are also highly attractive to bees and other beneficial insects.

Approximately 200 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn, winter and spring
Cold climates: Spring and early summer

Planting / Sowing
Broadcast seed directly onto prepared soil and lightly press into the surface, or raise in pots and transplant carefully once seedlings are established. Position in full sun and avoid overly rich soils, which can encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Keep moist during germination, then water only as required. Plants are drought tolerant once established and may self-seed freely if spent flowers are left to mature. Approximately 8–12 weeks to flowering.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
