Eschscholzia californica

A cheerful and easy-to-grow annual reaching approximately 30cm in height, producing a vibrant array of single flowers in warm golden shades. The bright blooms rise above finely divided silvery-green, fern-like foliage, creating a beautiful contrast that brings colour and texture to garden beds, borders, rockeries and wildflower plantings.

Flowering generously over many months, California Poppies are renowned for their toughness, drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils. The flowers open in sunshine and close during overcast or rainy weather, adding a charming daily rhythm to the garden. Once established, plants often self-sow, returning year after year with minimal effort. The blooms are highly attractive to bees and other beneficial insects.

Approximately 200 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn, winter and spring
Cold climates: Spring and early summer

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly where plants are to grow during spring and summer, lightly pressing seed onto the soil surface or covering only very lightly. Position in full sun and well-drained soil. Keep moist during germination, then water only as required. California Poppies dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred. Plants are highly drought tolerant once established and may self-seed freely in suitable conditions. Approximately 8–12 weeks to flowering.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
