Daucus carota subsp. sativus

Kuroda is a popular Japanese-style Carrot producing smooth, broad-shouldered, bright orange roots approximately 20 cm long with a distinctive rounded tip. Sweet, crisp and tender, it is a particularly reliable variety across a wide range of soils and climatic conditions.

The substantial roots have an excellent flavour and are versatile in the kitchen, equally good eaten fresh, grated into salads, juiced, pickled, roasted, steamed or added to soups, curries and stews. Kuroda types are especially valued for maintaining good eating quality even when grown under warmer conditions.

Adaptable and vigorous, Kuroda performs well in soils where some longer, more slender carrot varieties struggle. For the smoothest roots, prepare the soil deeply and remove stones and other obstructions before sowing. Avoid fresh manure, which can encourage roots to fork.

Approximately 300 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Most of the year, with best results autumn to spring
Mild climates: Spring to autumn
Cold climates: Spring to early autumn, avoiding periods of heavy frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Carrots dislike transplanting. Keep the soil surface consistently moist until germination.

Thin seedlings to approximately 3–5 cm apart once established, using young thinnings as baby carrots. Maintain even moisture as roots develop to encourage tender, evenly shaped carrots.

Harvest when roots reach approximately 20 cm long or earlier for smaller, tender carrots.

Maturity: approximately 75 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
