Larrea tridentata

Chaparral, also known as Creosote Bush, is a broad-leaved evergreen shrub growing to around 2 m tall. Native to the deserts of North America, it is exceptionally drought tolerant and thrives in hot, dry climates with well-drained soils. Bright yellow flowers appear in spring and are followed by small, fuzzy seed capsules. Its distinctive resinous fragrance is especially noticeable after rain and is characteristic of desert landscapes.

For centuries, Chaparral has been used by many Native American peoples for a wide variety of traditional purposes. It has a long history of external and internal medicinal use, including preparations traditionally valued for their antimicrobial properties. Modern research has identified biologically active compounds within the plant, and internal use is not recommended except under the guidance of a suitably qualified healthcare practitioner due to the potential risk of liver toxicity.

Approximately 120–180 seeds per gram

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to July (dry season)
Subtropics: September to November
Mild climates: September to November
Cold climates: October to December after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 5 mm deep into a free-draining sandy seed-raising mix. Germination may be improved by lightly scarifying the seed coat or soaking seed in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing. Keep warm with only moderate moisture, avoiding waterlogging. Once established, plant in a sunny position with excellent drainage. Chaparral is highly drought tolerant and requires little supplemental watering.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
