Chervil is a delicate, aromatic biennial herb growing to around 50 cm tall and is a classic ingredient in French cuisine, where it is often known as French parsley. Its finely divided, fern-like foliage has a mild flavour reminiscent of parsley with subtle notes of anise, making it an excellent addition to soups, sauces, egg dishes, salads and seafood. Unlike many culinary herbs, Chervil thrives in cooler conditions and tolerates partial shade, making it ideal for growing through the cooler months.
Approximately 450–550 seeds per gram
Approximately 200 seeds per packet
When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: April to August
Subtropics: March to September
Mild climates: March to October
Cold climates: September to December and February to April
Planting / Sowing
Direct sow seed 5 mm deep into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun during cooler weather or partial shade in warmer regions. Chervil dislikes transplanting due to its delicate taproot, so sow where it is to grow. Keep the soil consistently moist and harvest the young leaves regularly to encourage fresh growth. Succession sow every few weeks for a continuous supply.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
