Eryngium foetidum

Culantro, also known as Mexican Coriander or Sawtooth Coriander, is a tropical perennial herb prized for its bold coriander flavour and excellent heat tolerance. Forming a compact rosette of thick, glossy leaves 10–20 cm tall, it is the ideal substitute for true coriander in warm, humid climates where coriander quickly bolts. The robust leaves retain their flavour well during cooking and also dry exceptionally well, making Culantro a versatile culinary herb for year-round use.

Popular throughout the Caribbean, Central America and Southeast Asia, the leaves are used in soups, curries, stir-fries, salsas and sauces. Culantro prefers warm, sheltered conditions and partial shade, where it produces a continual harvest of tender leaves.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: September to April
Subtropics: October to March
Mild climates: October to January
Cold climates: October to December after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface or cover very lightly with fine seed-raising mix, keeping the soil consistently moist throughout the germination period. Germination is naturally slow and may take several weeks. Transplant into a sheltered position in partial shade with fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, spacing plants 20–30 cm apart. Harvest the outer leaves regularly to encourage continuous new growth.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
