Symphytum officinale

Comfrey is a hardy, long-lived perennial herb renowned for its usefulness in the garden. Deep-rooted and vigorous, it produces large, lush green leaves and attractive bell-shaped flowers that are highly appealing to bees and other pollinators.

A favourite among organic and permaculture gardeners, comfrey is commonly grown as a nutrient-rich addition to compost, used to make homemade liquid fertiliser or cut regularly for use as mulch around fruit trees and garden beds. Its extensive root system allows established plants to draw nutrients from deep within the soil, while the abundant foliage provides a valuable source of organic matter.

Comfrey also has a long history of traditional herbal use, particularly in external preparations such as poultices, salves and infused oils. Once established, plants are extremely resilient and can provide repeated harvests of foliage throughout the growing season.

These are root cuttings rather than seeds, providing a simple and reliable way to establish comfrey in the garden.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to spring
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn to spring
Cold climates: Spring after the ground has thawed

Planting

Plant root cuttings horizontally approximately 5–10 cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants approximately 60–90 cm apart and water well after planting. Keep the soil moist while new growth establishes.

Choose the planting position carefully, as comfrey develops a substantial root system and can be difficult to remove once established. Plants perform well in full sun to partial shade and appreciate moisture and fertile soil.

This is a seasonal product. Comfrey naturally goes dormant during winter and will regenerate from its roots when conditions warm in spring.
