Echinacea purpurea

Purple Coneflower is a hardy perennial native to North America and one of the world's most widely cultivated medicinal herbs. A member of the daisy family (Asteraceae), it produces striking purple, cone-shaped flowers throughout summer that are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. Equally at home in ornamental borders or medicinal herb gardens, it thrives in full sun or partial shade and is drought tolerant once established.

Echinacea has been extensively studied for its ability to support healthy immune function and possesses well-documented anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Traditionally, it is used to support the body during colds, coughs and other upper respiratory infections. The leaves, flowers and roots can all be used to prepare teas and tinctures, with roots from plants at least two years old generally regarded as the most potent medicinally.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface or cover lightly with 2–3 mm of fine seed-raising mix, as light assists germination. A period of cold stratification at around 5°C for 7 days may improve germination, although it is generally less important than for Echinacea angustifolia. Grow in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil, spacing plants 40–50 cm apart. Harvest leaves and flowers as required, with roots best harvested after at least two years of growth.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
