One of the world's oldest and most widely used medicinal plants, ginger has earned its place in both the kitchen and the herbal apothecary. This tropical perennial produces aromatic underground rhizomes with a warm, spicy flavour that can be used fresh, dried, candied, pickled or brewed into soothing teas.
Traditionally, ginger has been used to support healthy digestion, ease nausea and travel sickness, improve circulation and provide gentle warming relief during the colder months. Its naturally occurring compounds, including gingerols and shogaols, have been extensively studied for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Ginger thrives in warm, frost-free climates in rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Plant rhizomes in spring with the buds facing upwards, keeping them just below the soil surface. It prefers dappled shade or morning sun and consistent moisture throughout the growing season. Harvest can begin after around 8-10 months, or earlier if you would like tender young ginger with its delicate skin.
Easy to grow in garden beds or large pots, ginger is a rewarding addition to any edible garden, providing fresh harvests of one of nature's most versatile culinary and medicinal plants.
