Xerochrysum bracteatum

Tom Thumb Mixed is a compact Australian native everlasting producing masses of colourful, papery flowers on bushy plants reaching approximately 45 cm tall. The mixture offers a lively range of colours including yellow, gold, orange, pink, red and white, with flowers appearing over a long period.

Also known as Strawflower or Paper Daisy, the compact habit of Tom Thumb makes it particularly well suited to borders, containers, cottage gardens and the front of native garden beds. The blooms are excellent for fresh or dried arrangements and retain their colour and shape remarkably well after drying.

The flowers are also attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Hardy and easy to grow, plants thrive in full sun and well-drained soil and tolerate heat and dry conditions once established.

Seed count: approximately 1,400 seeds/g
Approximately 500 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to spring
Subtropics: Spring to autumn
Mild climates: Spring to early autumn
Cold climates: Spring after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or raise in trays, covering the fine seed only very lightly. Keep moist during germination and establishment.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 20–25 cm apart in full sun and well-drained soil. For dried flowers, harvest stems as the blooms begin to open but before the centres are fully exposed, then hang upside down in a dry, well-ventilated place.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
