Pisum sativum

Telephone, also known as Alderman, is a classic heirloom shelling Pea producing enormous, well-filled pods on vigorous climbing vines reaching approximately 2 m tall. Renowned for its delicate flavour and impressive pod size, it has long been a favourite with home gardeners and exhibition growers.

The large pods contain plump, sweet green peas with a tender texture and excellent flavour. Enjoy them freshly shelled and lightly cooked, add them to soups, stews, risottos and vegetable dishes, or blanch and freeze surplus harvests. The peas can also be allowed to mature and dry for use as a dried pulse.

First introduced in 1878, Telephone became famous for its exceptionally large pods, tall productive vines and high-quality peas. It later became widely known as Alderman and remains an exhibition-standard variety more than a century after its introduction.

The tall vines produce over a long period and require a sturdy trellis, fence or netting. Climbing peas reward the additional support with an extended harvest, particularly when mature pods are picked regularly.

Peas are among the world’s oldest cultivated food crops, originating in the Near East and grown since ancient times. Early peas were primarily harvested and dried for storage, with tender green shelling peas becoming popular much later.

Seed count: approximately 3–5 seeds/g
Approximately 140 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Late summer to autumn
Mild climates: Late summer to autumn
Cold climates: Spring, with autumn sowing possible in suitable areas

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 20–30 mm deep directly where plants are to grow. Peas generally dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred.

Space seeds approximately 5–10 cm apart and provide a strong trellis, netting or fence from an early stage. Vines can reach approximately 2 m tall and become heavily laden with pods.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Peas tolerate a range of soil types but dislike waterlogged conditions. Maintain consistent moisture during flowering and pod development.

Harvest when the pods are large and well filled but while the peas remain tender and sweet. Pick regularly to encourage continued production. For dried peas or seed saving, leave selected pods on healthy plants until fully mature and dry.

Maturity: approximately 70–78 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, we cannot send Pea seeds to Tasmania and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
