Mentha × piperita

Peppermint is one of the world's most widely recognised and useful herbs, valued for its refreshing aroma, cooling flavour and long history of medicinal use. This vigorous perennial produces lush green foliage rich in aromatic essential oils, particularly menthol, which gives the plant its characteristic scent and taste. Growing best in moist conditions, Peppermint forms spreading clumps that provide a continual harvest of leaves throughout the growing season.

In the kitchen, Peppermint is used fresh or dried in teas, desserts, fruit salads, sauces, confectionery and refreshing drinks. It is the classic flavouring for herbal teas, mouthwashes, candies and many traditional recipes. The leaves can be harvested regularly and used either fresh or preserved for later use.

Peppermint has a long tradition in herbal medicine, where it has been used to support digestive comfort, freshen the breath and promote general wellbeing. It also provides a natural source of potassium and other beneficial plant compounds. The strongly scented foliage attracts pollinators while helping create a fragrant and productive herb garden.

In the vegetable garden, Peppermint is often grown as a companion plant for tomatoes and cabbages and can help attract beneficial insects. Like many mints, it spreads readily and is often best grown in containers or contained garden beds.

Planting / Sowing

Surface sow seed onto moist seed-raising mix and press lightly into place, as light assists germination. Do not cover seed deeply. Keep consistently moist until seedlings emerge. Transplant into fertile, moisture-retentive soil in a partly shaded to sunny position, spacing plants 30–40 cm apart. Water regularly and harvest often to encourage fresh, vigorous growth.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
