Raphanus sativus

Tillage Radish is a vigorous Daikon-type radish grown primarily as a green manure, cover crop and soil improver. Its large, strong taproot penetrates deeply into the soil, helping break through compacted layers, improve soil structure and create channels for water, air and the roots of following crops.

Fast growing and producing substantial root and leafy biomass, Tillage Radish helps protect bare soil, suppress weeds and add valuable organic matter. When the large roots are left to decompose in the ground, they contribute organic material directly into the soil profile while leaving channels that can improve drainage and root penetration.

The nutritious foliage is also palatable to livestock, making it useful in suitable forage and mixed grazing systems.

Approximately 45–60 days to maturity

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn to spring
Cold climates: Late summer to autumn, or early spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly into prepared soil approximately 1–2 cm deep. For soil improvement, allow the strong taproots to develop fully before cutting the foliage and leaving the crop to break down naturally.

For green manure, slash before mature seed is produced and leave the plant material on the surface as mulch or lightly incorporate it into the soil. Roots can be left in place to decompose underground.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
