Scabiosa stellata

Starflower, also known as Drumsticks, is an unusual annual Scabiosa prized as much for its extraordinary seed heads as its delicate pincushion flowers. The soft blooms mature into distinctive spherical, papery seed heads with a beautifully geometric, honeycomb-like appearance.

Growing to approximately 70 cm tall, Starflower is a favourite with florists and flower growers. The long stems are excellent for cutting, while the decorative seed heads can be harvested and dried for everlasting arrangements, wreaths and other floral work. Flowers left in the garden are also attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Easy to grow and best in full sun, plants prefer well-drained soil and regular moisture while establishing. Harvest seed heads once they are fully formed and beginning to dry if growing for floral use.

Seed count: approximately 30 seeds/g
Approximately 30 seeds per packet

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow or raise in trays. Scatter seed onto the surface of moist soil or seed-raising mix and press gently into place. Barely cover, as light is required for germination. Germination generally takes approximately 10–20 days.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 25–30 cm apart in full sun and well-drained soil.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety.
