Mentha spicata

Spearmint is a classic perennial culinary herb with fresh, sweet leaves and the unmistakable cooling mint flavour. Considered one of the best mints for cooking, it pairs beautifully with carrots, peas, potatoes and lamb, and is the traditional choice for homemade mint sauce.

Fresh leaves are also excellent in salads, teas, cold drinks, desserts and Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes. Plants develop into vigorous leafy clumps and produce attractive spikes of pale purple flowers that are highly appealing to bees and other pollinating insects.

A hardy and productive perennial, Spearmint spreads readily once established. Growing in pots or contained garden beds is a good option where you want to keep its enthusiastic growth under control.

Seed count: approximately 10,000–15,000 seeds/g
Approximately 600 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to spring
Subtropics: Spring and autumn
Mild climates: Spring and autumn
Cold climates: Spring after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow onto the surface of moist seed-raising mix and press gently into place. The seed is extremely fine, so cover very lightly or leave uncovered and keep consistently moist until germination.

Transplant once seedlings are large enough to handle. Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, moisture-retentive soil. Regular picking encourages fresh, leafy growth.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
