Stevia rebaudiana

Stevia is a tender perennial herb grown for its naturally sweet leaves, which contain steviol glycosides that provide intense sweetness without the calories of sugar. Reaching around 80 cm tall, it is well suited to humid tropical and subtropical climates and can also be grown successfully in cooler regions when protected from frost. The fresh or dried leaves can be used to naturally sweeten teas, herbal infusions, desserts and other recipes. In late summer and autumn, plants produce delicate white flowers that attract beneficial insects, making Stevia both an attractive and useful addition to the edible garden.

Approximately 2,000–2,500 seeds per gram
Approximately 10 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: March to September
Subtropics: August to November
Mild climates: Spring to early summer
Cold climates: Spring after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of a fine, moist seed-raising mix or cover only very lightly, as light assists germination. Maintain a warm temperature of 20–25°C and keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged. Transplant seedlings into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, spacing plants 30–40 cm apart. Harvest leaves throughout the growing season, with the sweetest flavour generally occurring just before flowering.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
