Matthiola incana

Early Giant Imperial Mixed is a beautiful cool-season Stock prized for its rich fragrance and tall, elegant flower spikes. The mixture produces both fully double and single blooms in a romantic range of rose, lavender, carmine, cream, white and other soft pastel shades.

Growing approximately 45–75 cm tall, the strong, upright stems make this variety particularly well suited to cottage gardens, borders and dedicated cutting gardens. The wonderfully fragrant flowers are excellent for bouquets and arrangements, bringing both colour and perfume indoors.

An early-flowering variety, Giant Imperial performs best during the cooler months and flowers generously from late winter through spring. Plants prefer full sun and fertile, well-drained soil and can decline once conditions become consistently hot.

Approximately 200 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn in cooler locations
Subtropics: Autumn
Mild climates: Autumn to early winter
Cold climates: Late winter to spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow or raise in trays for transplanting while young. Cover seed lightly with soil or seed-raising mix and keep consistently moist during germination.

Transplant carefully once seedlings are established, spacing approximately 20–30 cm apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Stock has a delicate root system and dislikes unnecessary root disturbance, so handle young seedlings gently.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
