Helianthus annuus

Sunbird is a vigorous, tall-growing Sunflower producing large, bright yellow flowers followed by generous heads of tasty edible seeds. Growing to approximately 2 m tall, this hardy variety makes an impressive addition to productive gardens, pollinator plantings and the back of garden beds.

A particularly versatile Sunflower, Sunbird can be grown for its mature edible seeds, used as a nutritious microgreen or planted as poultry forage. The large flowers are highly attractive to bees and other beneficial insects, while mature seed heads can also provide valuable food for seed-eating birds.

Drought hardy and disease resistant, Sunbird thrives in warm weather and full sun. Plants are fast growing and perform best in fertile, well-drained soil, although established plants tolerate relatively dry conditions well.

Approximately 80 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Most of the year, avoiding excessively wet periods
Subtropics: Spring to autumn
Mild climates: Spring to summer
Cold climates: Spring to early summer after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 2–3 cm deep. Keep soil moist during germination and establishment.

Thin seedlings to approximately 30–50 cm apart in full sun. Choose a position protected from strong winds or provide support as plants become tall and heavy flower heads develop. For microgreens, sow densely into trays and harvest while young.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
