Lathyrus odoratus

Royal Family is a classic Sweetpea strain developed in America and prized for its large, showy flowers, rich fragrance and improved tolerance of warmer conditions. A Spencer-type Sweetpea, it produces beautifully ruffled blooms in a regal mixture of pink, purple, red and white.

The vigorous climbing plants produce long flower stems ideal for cutting, making Royal Family an excellent choice for cottage gardens and dedicated cutting gardens. Flowers are produced generously over many weeks when regularly picked, filling both the garden and floral arrangements with their characteristic Sweetpea perfume.

Royal Family performs particularly well in cool to temperate climates but can also be grown successfully in warmer areas when sown early. Plants prefer full sun, rich, fertile soil and regular moisture, with mulch helping to keep the root zone cool as temperatures rise.

Seed count: approximately 10 seeds/g
Approximately 20 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter in cooler locations
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn to early spring
Cold climates: Autumn or late winter to spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 2–3 cm deep. Alternatively, raise in individual pots or cells and transplant carefully while young. Keep soil consistently moist during germination.

Space plants approximately 15–20 cm apart and provide a sturdy trellis, fence or other support for climbing. Pinch out growing tips while plants are young to encourage bushier growth and additional flowering stems. Regularly pick flowers and remove developing seed pods to prolong flowering.

Sweetpea seeds and other parts of the plant are not edible and should not be confused with edible garden peas.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
