Acacia victoriae (Elegant Wattle)

One of Australia's most important edible seed wattles, increasingly recognised for its potential as a sustainable human food crop. Acacia victoriae produces protein and nutrient-rich seeds that have been traditionally used by Aboriginal peoples for thousands of years and are now finding their way into a wide range of modern foods including flour blends, breads, desserts, ice cream, mousses and hot beverages. The seeds have a distinctive roasted, nutty flavour and are highly valued for their nutritional profile, containing approximately 41% carbohydrate, 17% protein and 29% fibre.

A fast-growing and hardy species, Acacia victoriae often flowers within two years and typically lives for 10 to 15 years. Highly tolerant of drought, heat and fire, it is well suited to dryland and low-rainfall regions. The plant also serves as a useful fodder source during dry periods and contributes to soil improvement through nitrogen fixation. Seeds are generally easy to harvest, making it an attractive option for both home growers and larger-scale food production systems.

Approximately 30 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: April to August
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn to spring
Cold climates: Spring and autumn

Planting / Sowing
Seed should be scarified prior to sowing by pouring hot (not boiling) water over the seed and allowing it to soak for 12 to 24 hours. Sow into a free-draining seed raising mix and lightly cover. Keep moist but not waterlogged during germination. Position in full sun and transplant once seedlings are established. Highly tolerant of drought and poor soils once established. Flowering may occur within 2 years under favourable conditions.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
